Propeller shaft, also known as universal shaft, is a driving shaft that connects the transmission main shaft to the differential of the real axle.

It transmits the power from gearbox to rear axle with the help of universal joints. It is used to transmit the power of rotational motion from the gearbox to the final drive.

The shaft is hollow and circular. It includes u-joints and slip or slider joint which adjusts the length of the shaft when vehicle is on a bump.

There are two types of propeller shafts, single propeller with one cardan hinge situated near gearbox, and double propeller shaft. Double propeller shaft have cardan hinges on both ends of shaft and runs to the rear axle.
